Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program

2. Where is the Metals Recycling Facility?: Hammerhead Metals Recycling is located in the Central Maui Baseyard at 2000 Mokulele Hwy., Puunene, HI 96784. Check their website for more information by clicking on the link below. Hammerhead Metals Recycling

3. Are electric vehicles eligible for this program?: Yes, electric and/or hybrid-electric vehicles are eligible for the Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program as of 07/01/2022. The metals recycling facility will accept and dispose of your electric or hybrid-electric vehicle with the installed electric vehicle battery for no additional battery disposal fee.

4. My car is a commercial vehicle used for our business. Is it eligible?: NO, this program is for Maui County residents only.

5. I only live here for part of the year, but my car is registered on Maui. Is it eligible?: YES, if your car is not used for business and is registered in Maui County.

6. My car doesn’t run and has missing parts. Can I still participate in the program?: YES, after you register it as “Permanently Junked,” have it towed to the metals recycling facility. You must be present to submit all proper documentation.

7. I don’t have the title anymore, but it was registered in my name. What should I do to participate?: You can get a duplicate certificate of title at the DMVL and then register it as “Permanently Junked.”

8. I have the signed title, but it is not officially registered to me yet. Can I participate in this program?: You must first register the vehicle as “Permanently Junked” in your name with the DMVL.

9. My registration is expired, can I still junk my car?: According to the DMVL, “You may permanently junk a vehicle which you no longer want regardless of whether or not the registration is current or expired.”

10. Will the County provide towing services?: No, owners are responsible to deliver their vehicles to Hammerhead themselves.

11. Do I have to clean out my car before I take it to the metals recycling facility.: YES. Vehicles with “excessive waste” may be refused by the facility, at their discretion.

12. How many tires are included in this program?: Up to 5 tires mounted on or within the vehicle will be accepted. More than that will be refused or you will be charged for them.

13. Will I be charged anything at the metals recycling facility?: NO, if you meet all the eligibility criteria and you have all the proper documentation. If eligibility criteria are not met, or if you do not have all the proper documentation, you may be charged.

14. What if my vehicle is refused at the facility? Can I just leave it behind?: NO. Vehicles abandoned at the site that will be tagged, ticketed, and charged as an abandoned vehicle, per usual procedures.

15. Why do I have to be present when the vehicle is delivered to the recycling facility? Can’t I just give the paperwork to the tow driver?: You must be present to ensure that the vehicle is eligible and that all documentation is in order. If for some reason the facility must charge you or if the vehicle is refused, you must be present to either make payment or make the decision to remove the vehicle. The tow company cannot be responsible for your paperwork.

16. What if I get to the facility and I don’t meet the criteria?: The facility may charge you to dispose of the vehicle or refuse it. If the vehicle is refused, you are responsible to remove it from the facility and put it back on private property.

17. I live on Molokai. What am I supposed to do with my old car?: You should deliver your vehicle to the Molokai Metals Facility at the Molokai Landfill. They will receive your car at no charge during regular landfill hours. Call Refrigerant Recycling, Inc. for more requirements and instructions at

18. I live on Lanai. What am I supposed to do with my old car?: The County holds periodic collection events for a limited number of cars. Please contact the Office of Abandoned Vehicles and Metals for more information.
