Mayor Michael Victorino expressed appreciation to the Maui County Council for approving resolutions accepting the dedication of parks and Dairy Road roadway parcel from A&B Properties at its meeting that adjourned today. Chris Benjamin, president and CEO of Alexander & Baldwin and the mayor announced the land acquisition agreement on Aug. 12, 2022.
“Today’s decisive action by the Maui County Council is deeply appreciated,” Mayor Victorino said. “I especially want to thank Councilmember Yuki-Lei Sugimura for quickly moving the resolution through her Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and to Councilmember Mike Molina for his longtime advocacy for this important acquisition.”
The Council’s approval enables the development of a land acquisition agreement to establish a North Shore Preservation Zone to include Baldwin Beach Park, Baby Beach (Wawaʻu Point), and 4 acres of shoreline between Mama’s Fish House and Hoʻokipa. Other acquisitions include lands adjacent to Hoaloha Park in Kahului, Rainbow Park in Makawao and eight roadway parcels on Dairy Road in Kahului.
“I also want to thank public access advocates Kai Nishiki, Lucienne de Naie and Albert Perez for their help and support in making this wish come true for the people of Maui County,” Mayor Victorino added.
A&B’s donation of more than 45 acres of land for parks and open space culminate more than two years of negotiations led by the mayor and his administrative team.
