Maui County closes three north shore beach parks following shark attack at Paia Bay

Maui County has closed three north shore beach parks following a shark attack Saturday afternoon at Paia Bay, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

The affected parks are Baldwin Beach Park, Lower Paia Beach Park and Kuau Bay Beach Park. The parks are scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5.

Maui County is working with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, which is also responding to the incident

The shark attack was reported around 4:10 p.m. Saturday at Paia Bay. A woman in her early 50s had been swimming about 40 feet from shore when people saw that she was in distress and needed help. Firefighters were first responders at the scene.
