The County of Maui Department of Transportation is seeking input from the public on proposed changes to Maui Bus routes as part of the Getting on Board Maui Bus Route Study.
The study aims to improve and expand transit service. Maui Bus has identified potential changes for Routes 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 15, 23, 25, 35, 39, and 40.
The proposed changes would affect bus routes in Central Maui, West Maui, South Maui and Upcountry. Maps for each of the areas can be found on the project website at www.gettingonboardmauibus.com.
A couple of routes (Route 8 Waihee Villager in Central Maui and Route 39 Kula Islander) would be replaced by on-demand service. This would be a flexible transit option that allows people to request trips by phone or smartphone app. Trips must start and end within a specified zone. Trips are usually shared with others traveling in the same general direction.
The deadline for feedback on the proposed changes is Dec. 31, 2021. Here are ways to get involved:
A hearing on the proposed route changes will be held in a virtual public hearing from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, on the County of Maui’s Facebook Live. For those who are unable to join live, the video will be available for view on the County of Maui Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/countyofmaui/live. A video recording of the event and all event materials will be shared on www.gettingonboardmauibus.com.
