Out of an abundance of caution, the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation will close Baldwin Beach Park and Ho`okipa Beach Park on Saturday, Jan. 16, through Monday, Jan. 18, because of forecasts of dangerous conditions from large swells along north-facing shores.
The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning on Friday, predicting high surf for the north-facing shores of Maui and the north- and west-facing shores of Molokai. The largest surge of a north-northwest swell is expected to build today and peak at 40 to 50 feet high on Saturday before beginning a steady decline, weather forecasters reported.
The Maui Fire Department recommended the closure of Baldwin and Ho`okipa Beach Parks based on the high-surf forecast.
