About the Facility

Construction of the new Iao water treatment plant began in mid-2016 and was completed in late 2018, with the plant going online in October 2018.   It is located on South Alu Road in Wailuku and helps to reduce the current draw on the Iao Aquifer.  The plant produces approximately 1.70 million gallons per day.

The approximate cost of the Iao water treatment plant was $21.5 million.  This treatment plant uses state of the art technology to produce high quality drinking water, including next generation membrane barrier filtration along with a non-hazardous onsite sodium hypochlorite generation system for disinfection which only uses salt, water and electricity.
