What to Expect After You Apply

Civil Service Positions

Initial Screening

Your application will be screened to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications for the job you are applying for. You will be notified of the results in writing via email or postal mail, generally within 4 to 6 weeks.

Examination

If your application is accepted, you will be scheduled for any required examinations. Examinations are administered in the County of Maui only. You must qualify on all required examinations to be eligible for employment. You will be notified of your results in writing via email or postal mail, generally within 1 to 2 weeks of taking the test.

Eligibility List

If you successfully qualify on all required examinations, your name will be placed on a list of persons eligible for hiring consideration for that job. This "eligible list" may be used to fill any current vacancies, and any vacancies that occur during the life of the list (typically one year.)

Department Screening

If your name is selected from the eligible list to be considered for a specific opening, you will be contacted by the hiring department, and will be required to go through that department's screening process. This may consist of an interview, background check, performance test, etc. If you are extended an offer of employment, it will be contingent upon completing all required pre-employment evaluations, including physical and drug-tests.

Note: Pre-employment physicals are done at the applicant's expense.

Non-Civil Service Positions

If you have applied for other than a civil service position, your application will be forwarded to the hiring department for consideration. You will be required to undergo that department's screening process, which may consist of an interview, background check, performance test, etc. If you are extended an offer of employment, it will be contingent upon completing all required pre-employment evaluations, including physical and drug-tests.

Note: Pre-employment physicals are done at the applicant's expense.
